This workshop will concentrate on moving figures - Ballet dancers, runners, cyclists…any figure in movement; Carole will demonstrate how to achieve the effect of a moving body and how we can capture the impression of speed in our drawings and paintings.

It will include sketching buildings, boats and beach scenes as well as quick people studies and a “how to” on perspective – all the skills required to improve your observation and drawing technique and the perfect way to fill your sketchbook. We will mostly be working outdoors, weather permitting.

Making a painting look bright and sunny depends on creating enough tonal contrast, so we will start by practising mixing a range of greys to use to paint convincing, lively shadows. Carole will demonstrate a sunny street scene using watercolours but you are welcome to use acrylics or soft pastels.

Carole will guide you through many of the skills needed to achieve a likeness and produce a good portrait. Suitable for beginners Medium: watercolours, soft pencils, charcoal and pastel pencils

This is a new initiative and an exciting opportunity to visit and sketch this historic 16th century house and its beautiful gardens, which will once more become a place for artistic and horticulture as it was in the time of Cedric Morris and Lett Haines. We will spend the day sketching and painting
